The Upper Kern River is flowing just under 400 CFS, providing excellent conditions for both wading and fishing. Trout action remains steady, especially from Kernville upstream to Johnsondale Bridge. Recent CDFW stockings in Sections 4 and 5 have helped keep the bite consistent. Anglers are catching fish on salmon eggs, garlic-scented PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and small spinners such as Rooster Tails and Panther Martins. Fly anglers are also finding success with attractor nymphs, bead head Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Parachute Adams, and small streamers worked through deeper pockets and behind rocks. Water temperatures remain in the low 60s, with the best fishing occurring early and late in the day. On the Lower Kern, trout are responding well to worms, salmon eggs, and small spinners. Smallmouth bass are also beginning to show in the slower, rockier stretches, where soft plastics, curly-tail grubs, and small swimbaits in natural colors are producing well. At the time of reporting the Upper Kern is running at 375 CFS and the Lower Kern at 1,739 CFS.
