Fishing conditions on the Kern River continue to improve as flows remain favorable on the Upper Kern, attracting plenty of anglers from Kernville to the Johnsondale Bridge. The CDFW has scheduled trout plants this week in Sections 5 and 6, and many anglers are already reporting limits throughout the river. Trout are biting well on salmon eggs, trout jigs, and spinners, while fly anglers are finding success with attractor nymphs, streamers, and dry flies during the late afternoon hatches. On the Lower Kern, anglers are catching trout on salmon eggs, garlic-scented PowerBait, and small spinners. The bass bite remains strong throughout the canyon, with both smallmouth and largemouth hitting jigs, soft plastics, and small crankbaits. Catfish action is also good, with dip baits and cut bait producing consistent catches. As of this report, the Upper Kern is flowing at 424 CFS, while the Lower Kern is running at 1,852 CFS.
