Fishing is best on the Lower McCloud River early and late.Think of using small may fly nymphs in the mornings and caddis in the afternoons. Dry fly is best in the afternoons after 5 pm. Heading into a hot trend now go commando. I like very small black micro may flies size 18 & s&m’s the same size. On top try an ec caddis and search the foam lines.  The Nature Conservancy fished better this week as crowds are starting to dissipate. Golden Stones are gone now and trout are looking for smaller insects. Check tail outs for incoming brown trout from Shasta Lake. Use a 10 to 15 foot sink tip with black or purple crystal bugger size 8. Trout will take them for tadpoles that are appearing now in most North State rivers. Also pocket water, go stimi-dropper with 2 flies below the dry. (One doubles for the weight.) Watch for snakes on hotter days as most are heading right for the rivers edge in this dry climate, a month ahead of time. www.jacktrout.com, (530) 926-4540; The Fly Shop (530) 222-3555;
