On Wednesday May 6, 2026 the California Fish and Game Commission will have a phone conference to determine if they will agree to accept the California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommendation of an In-River Sport Fishing Salmon season. The proposed recommendation is for an In-River Sport Fall Chinook Salmon season quota of 3,248 for the Klamath River Basin. They have already agreed to have an Ocean Commercial and Sport Fishing season with an In-River Spring Salmon season of one fish per day July 1 to August 15 or until the quota is met. If the In-River Fall Run Chinook Salmon Sport fishing season passes it would be 2 Salmon per day with 1 Adult, 1Jack or 2 Jacks. It would break down to; Lower Klamath River below Hwy 101 Bridge (the spit) 974, 650 above Hwy 101 Bridge to the Hwy 96 Bridge at Weitchpec. For the Upper Klamath River above Hwy 96 at Weitchpec 552. The Trinity River would be 1,072 Adult Salmon fish; 536 Adult Salmon from the mouth of the Trinity River to the Hwy 299 Bridge West at Burnt Ranch and 536 Adult Salmon for the upper Trinity above Hwy 299 Bridge West. I know this doesn’t sound like very many fish but at least it is a semblance of a fishing season. Remember we haven’t had a Salmon fishing season for three years! We now could possibly have one.
There has been Spring water releases for the past several weeks and the river is up fairly high which has made fishing of Steelhead fishing a little bit hard but Spring Salmon fishing will start July1. So, it is time to get your fishing license report cards and start to going through your fishing tackle to get ready of fishing!
Lewiston Lake: Lewiston Lake flows have been up but the warm days have made fishermen angus to go fishing. Louise has said the fishing has been good and they have been very busy. Fly fishermen are doing the best with Prince Nymphs, Midges and some dry flies. Bait fishermen are using garlic scented bait and night crawlers. The best fishing seemed to be form boats. You can contact the Pine Cove Marina and ask Louise or Matt (530)778-3878) for Lewiston Lake fishing; for the Upper Trinity River you can call Indian Creek Lodge, Andy or Hannah, (530)623-6294), Junction City Store, (530)623-2803. The Junction City store has a new owner and I have not contacted her yet.
Willow Creek area: Willow Creek area has been kind of slow as I have not seen very may people out. Right now, most of the fishermen are down in Hoopa or up river. Up river, has been seeing some action but not real hot yet.
Mid-Klamath to Happy Camp: The Klamath River at Weitchpec is flowing 5,367cfs. This is a decrease of 4,640cfs. The Iron Gate/Bogus Creek area is flowing 1,300cfs an increase of 199cfs from the last report. The river is flowing higher so fishing is a bit hard stating to see some action. We should start to see a drop in the water flow soon. For better information I suggest you call or check out their face book for Marble Mountain Guest Ranch (800) 522-6284, or Scott Caldwell, SC Guide Service (530)905-0758 to get proper fishing information to fish the Upper Klamath.
