Winter Fishing Has Been Slow

I am back! I know it has been some time since the las Fishing Report but I hope to do much better now that I am back.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! I hope you have a safe and great Saint Patrick’s Day!

I am waiting for the latest reports from CDFW to see if we will have a Salmon Fishing Season this year. They will meet next month to determine if there is enough surplus Salmon in the Ocean to meet the Natural Escapement Goals for the Klamath River Basin and the Sacramento River to have an In-River Sport Fishing Season, things were looking good until the Trinity River Hatchery had their accident and had to release all of their fish in the rearing ponds. I have not been able to find out if there were enough stock to reach egg collection goals for the Hatchery. I sure hope so. The release will not hurt the returns for this year but could really affect the next couple of year’s fish stock returns. The Pacific Management Council will meet in April to review the data to estimate the In-River Natural Escapement goals can be reached close enough for an In-River Sport Fishing Season.

The preliminary reports for Out Migration of Juveniles on Scott and Bogus Creeks are looking very good. Bogus Creek is flowing a little high so the trapping has been stopped for the time being until the trap can be put back into the Creek. I t looks like the Klamath could start having some good native Salmon returns in the next couple of years. Now, if only the Trinity River will have the same thing happen, we could possibly start having a salmon fishing season again.

The Ocean Run of Brown Trout was very hard this year as the river had very high winter flows. As it stands now March 20th will start the Spring Flow Releases for the Trinity River. The first flus will reach peak of 1,200cfs on March 20 at 10:00am then recede to 300cfs March 25 and start back up again to 1,650cfs by March 29. The full release program should be posted on the TRRP WEB site.

Trinity River Hatchery summary: This year’s final Trinity River Hatchery summary is out. Julian Week 52 ending Dec. 30, 2025, Spring Chinook Salmon, 9-jacks, 69- adults, season hatchery 6,500- adults; Spring Coho 55; Spring Hatchery Steelhead, 2,048-adults; Fall Chinook Salmon Julian Week 2 ending Jan 14, 1,167-jacks 10,726-adults, season total 14,931; Fall Coho Salmon total, 58-adults,

Lewiston Lake: Lewiston Lake flows are starting to go wild as the Spring flow are starting. Fishing might start up again after the flows are reduced. You can contact the Pine Cove Marina and ask Louise or Matt (530)778-3878) for Lewiston Lake fishing; for the Upper Trinity River you can call Indian Creek Lodge, Andy or Hannah, (530)623-6294), Junction City Store, (530)623-2803. The Junction City store has a new owner and I have not contacted her yet.

Willow Creek area: Willow Creek area has been seeing some high water during the storms, but now the Spring flow will be starting so fishing is going to be a bit hard for the time being.

Mid-Klamath to Happy Camp: The Klamath River at Weitchpec is flowing 10,007cfs. This is a decrease of 9,000cfs. The Iron Gate/Bogus Creek area is flowing 1,101cfs an increase of 114cfs from the last report.  The river is flowing higher so fishing is a bit hard. For better information I suggest you call or check out their face book Marble Mountain Guest Ranch (800) 522-6284, or Scott Caldwell, SC Guide Service (530)905-0758 to get proper fishing information to fish the Upper Klamath.
