Big Lake Oroville crappie

A near-record white crappie was caught this week in Lake Oroville. The 2 pound, 15 ounce slabside was just shy of the 3 pound, 4 ounce lake record for the species. Angler Randy Carroll of Chico related, "I was fishing from shore right next to the Lime Saddle boat launch at about 11:00 PM. The big fish hit on a plain nightcrawler under a lighted bobber, and took some drag on six-pound test line. I also caught a bunch of bass, and the crappie was bigger than all of them."

Current record fish from Lake Oroville include:
- largemouth bass- 15.84 pounds;
- smallmouth bass- 6-2;
- spotted bass- 8-2;
- redeye bass- 3-4;

Irvine Lake catfish to 17-2 stage late-night bite The best bite on catfish at Irvine Lake this week was made to order for night owls, according to Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "The catfish bite really came on after 11:00 PM", observed Getty. "Before that is was just fair for mostly eating-size 2 to 6 pounders." Good numbers of catfish were fooled by mackerel, shrimp, and cut skipjack. The key to fishing with any bait is to use no sinker at...... Read More
