GENERAL CONDITIONS

The weather this week here at Lake Del Valle has varied day to day. Some days we have no wind with temperatures in the low to mid 70s, then some days we have winds up to 25 MPH with temperatures in the high 50s to mid 60s. The surface temperature this week is sitting at 74 degrees making it a little more difficult to catch trout even with our plant of 750 LBS on 5/26/17.

Our good friends Dr. Al Hurwitz and Abbey Lev came out this week and here is their report:

"Al Hurwitz of Saratoga and Abbey Lev of Sunnyvale trolled hard today, but caught only one nice rainbow trout just north of Swallow Bay along the eastern shore. It weighed 2.2 lbs. Used a J-9 jointed Rapala with scent applied. Cold front had moved in. Surface temperature of the water was around 75 degrees. Experienced some very heavy winds which did not help our fishing in any way. Did not see many fish on the sonar, so suspect that the trout and bass were scattered. Water level is way up, and visibility at least 6 feet (water quite clear). If trolling, suggest trying different water column and trolling depths, as well as changing plugs and spoons/spinners frequently to find the fish and "match the hatch". Trout will probably go to deeper depths as water temperature rises. Smallmouth, largemouth and striped bass fishing should keep improving.

All the best, Dr. Al Hurwitz”

CATFISH

Catfish are still very slow this week with no reports of any being caught. If you want to try and catch one your best bet would be to fish by fallen trees, tule patches and weed beds. Best baits would be anchovies, nightcrawlers or sardines.

TROUT

Trout have slowed down a little this week with anglers having to work pretty hard to find them. The majority of the trout are being caught in colder water out by the Dam or in the upper narrows. Most anglers are catching them on either power bait or mice tails. I would also recommend using Kastmasters or smaller jerk baits.

STRIPED BASS

Striper fishing is still steady with anglers catching them in the lower and upper narrows. Most anglers are catching them on either anchovies, sardines, or nightcrawlers. I would also recommend using jigs, either hair raisers or chatterbaits.
