Merced River - CA

River Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
The Merced River flows from Yosemite National Park into the Central Valley, offering diverse fishing opportunities along its course. In the upper river near Yosemite and El Portal, anglers target wild rainbow and brown trout in clear, cold water. Fly fishing is popular with dry flies and nymphs, especially during summer hatches. These sections often have special regulations, so check before fishing.

As the river drops into the foothills near Briceburg and Highway 140, trout remain the main attraction in spring and fall. In summer, smallmouth bass become more common in deeper pools. Spinners, crankbaits, and soft plastics work well here.

In the warmer, lower valley stretches near Snelling and Merced, the river shifts to a warmwater fishery. Largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and carp are all present. Catfish bite well in the evenings using cut bait, while crappie and bluegill are great for family fishing. Periodic trout stockings provide easy access fishing in parks like McConnell and Hagaman.

The Merced River offers something for everyone—from coldwater fly fishing to family-friendly bass and catfish spots. With seasonal variety and scenic surroundings, it’s a Central California gem for anglers of all skill levels.
