Yuba River - Upper - Donner Summit, CA

River Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
The Upper Yuba River, near Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada, is a classic high-country freestone stream offering excellent wild trout fishing in a rugged alpine setting. This section of the river, fed by snowmelt and mountain springs, supports populations of rainbow and brown trout, with occasional brook trout in higher tributaries. Fish range from 6 to 12 inches, with larger trout possible in deeper pools and shaded runs.

Fishing is best from late June through early fall, once spring runoff subsides and insect activity increases. Fly anglers will find consistent dry fly action during summer hatches, particularly with caddisflies, mayflies, and terrestrials. Recommended patterns include Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, and small Stimulators. When surface activity is slow, subsurface techniques using beadhead nymphs or small stonefly imitations are effective. Light spinning tackle with small spinners also produces fish in faster runs.

Access is excellent via I-80 and Highway 20, with popular points at Cisco Grove, Kingvale, and Rainbow Lodge. The surrounding Tahoe National Forest allows for dispersed camping and hiking access. Anglers should use caution early in the season due to swift flows and cold water.

Open from late April through mid-November, the Upper Yuba near Donner Summit is a must-fish destination for anglers seeking wild trout, technical water, and stunning Sierra scenery.
