SFR roving Reporter Leigh Rowan fished the La Jolla Kelp Beds from Seaforth Sportfishing in late July and had a bang-up day on the nice Calicos, monster Lingcod, and horse-sized Sardines. He and 72 other brave anglers headed out on the New Seaforth early on last Sunday morning only to find that their bait tanks were filled with huge, near-useless 6 to 10 inch sardines, and to find the water at the kelp beds had turned to a cooler, dark purple. Perhaps limits of Calicos were not to be the case...until Captain J.R. did something unthinkable -- after 2 hours of spotty barracuda fishing in the Bull Kelp, he turned the boat around, headed back to the bait barge, and picked up some fresh (less than an hour old!) anchovies. He saved the day - our trip quickly went from a handful of rockfish and lings to a smattering of good sized Calicos, and more rockfish, sculpin, and other tasty La Jolla kelp fish. Read his report for details of the trip, as well as pictures of beautiful girls with beautiful fish. As always, thanks go out to the great folks at Seaforth - San Diego is lucky to have them, and they make fishing in San Diego an easy and fun thing to do. Until the next time, tight lines, and all the best! Leigh
