A quick note about locations Kevin is fishing in the Sacramento River near Colusa for feisty springtime stripers, near Chico for shad, in Lake Oroville for coho, and in Redding for fantastic wild trout action. It's a great time to be fishing!

The Sacramento River striper fishing is still going strong with good limits everyday, fishing in the section from Meridian Bridge to Grimes. While the fishing has slowed a little from the torrid pace earlier in the season, crowds are way down, and it is still easy limits with live minnows. While most of the fish have been in the 4- to 7-pound range, some nice stripers up to almost 10 pounds have been caught this week. A bonus sighting was seeing a huge sturgeon jump - they can get big in the Sacramento River. Good striper fishing is expected to continue for at least a couple more weeks.

The wildlife along the river in the Colusa area is like something out of Wild Kingdom. On recent trips, we've spotted turkeys, baby turkeys the size of softballs, deer, muskrats, beavers, mallards, wood ducks, doves, quail, great blue herons, green herons, egrets, redtail hawks, ospreys, and many kinds of shore birds. Combine that with the great fishing, and you've got a truly memorable trip.

Shad Season Gets Underway:
A little further upriver, the shad season is getting underway below Scotty's Landing in Chico. The usual spots like the Washout and Road 29 are producing shad, and some trips are scheduled for shad next week. These silver acrobats are a lot of fun, and when a school is located, it can be fantastic action on light tackle.

Redding Wild Trout Fishing Shines:
In the Redding area, the Sacramento River has been kicking out some spectacular wild trout fishing, with frequent doubles and triples for colorful wild trout up to 5 pounds. It is a true world-class trout fishery, with 20- to 50-fish days common. The Sundial Bridge is spectacular, and don't forget to visit Turtle Bay.

Red-hot Lake Oroville Coho Fishing:

In the Chico/Oroville area, Lake Oroville fishing has been red hot. The lake is full with lots of fish to be caught. A recent trip on Tuesday, May 22 resulted in 30 coho salmon for six anglers, which is full limits. These coho go ballistic when caught, and one even jumped right into the boat!

Canadian honkers, mallards, and opsreys are often sighted at Lake Oroville, and sometimes there will be deer, raccoons, and various other critters on the bank.

Kevin called in even though he didn't know the day he knew about Striper fishing. "Striper fishing is still at full swing. We had 5 people today, Art, Jack, Mike, Tom and Ken of San Francisco. We were on the Sacramento above the Tisdale Weir. We had several fish, around 20 or 21. There were doubles and triples so we lost count of a few. Our biggest fish was around 6 lbs. caught by Tom. Lots and lots of schooling...... Read More
