July 19th ended the first of our salmon seasons for 2026. The Steller Sunrise, captained by Lowell Wallace, treated many satisfied fishermen to a great salmon bite. The ocean was quite problematic during the last week of this season, but being eager for the delicious taste of salmon many people endured the choppy seas. The fishing was great during this time as many limits were filled very early in the mornings. Although the bite was not "open wide", the bite was definitely ON! Most fish were caught three to six miles out of Humboldt Bay, The average size was six to ten pounds, but many were in the fifteen to twenty pound range, and a few weighed thirty pounds. One fish only weighed a few pounds, as a shark ate most of it! We are waiting to hear if we will be able to fish for salmon again, with a season to resume on August 1st!
