Al Hurwitz and Paul Clouse trolled Los Vaqueros Reservoir on February 1, 2024 in between heavy rain storms. We were lucky, as the day proved to be perfect for fishing—just enough breeze, perfect cloud cover, and clear water with a surface temperature of 54.5-55.5 degrees. We hooked on to six Mt. Lassen Rainbows, keeping the three largest, these three weighing an aggregate of 7.5-8 pounds. The three released fish weighed about 0.75-1.0 pound each. Pictured below is Al with a 3.5+ pound Lassen and Paul holding the three kept Rainbows. Five of the six were caught in the back of Cox Cove, and one in Howden Cove. They were in very shallow water in 12-15 foot water columns. For the most part we were flat lining jointed Rapalas about 5-7 feet below the surface. One fish was caught on a streamer fly with a “wiggle disc” placed 3-6 inches up the line to give action to the streamer. Great  fights from the fish, especially as they come to the side of the boat.

Trolling has definitely improved over the past several weeks due to the continued fish planting as well as the  migration of Trout from their planting site into the more southern coves of the lake.

Great day! We’ll be back soon.

All the best,
Paul Clouse, Lafayette
Dr. Al Hurwitz, Saratoga
