I've been out on Shasta Lake chasing winter trout.  The lake is in great shape considering the really wet weather patterns we saw in January.  The top ends of the lake arms are pretty dirty but not unfishable.  The lower end of the lake is mostly green with a hint of turbidity this week.  Floating debris is a factor but only in small sections of the lake.  Water temps are hovering between 47-48 degrees and I've seen 43 degree water up high in the lake arms.  There's a lot of bait (Shad) in the lower lake but I have seen some up higher as well.  I've been finding success on both the downriggers and lines set out on side planers for both rainbows and browns.  Stick baits and spoons are working for me most days.  More and more browns are being caught now and it will only get more consistent as we get into the late Feb-March timeframe.  We only have a few months left before the spring/summer trout and salmon fishing begins so lets enjoy our winter fishing conditions before they are gone again until late fall.  March has been my best month for trophy browns on Shasta year after year and its just 4 weeks away.  I have available dates in March so now would be a good time to call jaynie to reserve your day of fishing for trophy brown trout on Shasta Lake.
