Reaching 70F+ degrees surface temps officially. pH is 9.21-9.22 in the south basin (9.46 above Pelican Pt). Visibility 6-7ft with secchi dish (white & in full sun). DFW has posted the catch & keep recommendation to preserve the life of the trout durning the summer months. They may swim away but after the battle their gills can't transpire the needed oxygen to recover due to erosion of the mucous membrane covering the gills, many released in summer sink to the bottom where there is little to no dissolved oxygen & die within 24/48 hours...they also bleed out at the capillary level. We've seen it happen. This recommendation posting is normal for this time of year, going on for decades now. It is not a law (such as not driving on the shoreline or old lake bottom is) however, there are reasons we all follow it. It's temporary & preserves the fishery. Following it insures big fish in fall & plenty for all. It's always lifted once the water cools off in early fall or when water temps drop. Wanna catch & release in an alkaline lake? Wait till fall & winter. We support the DFW posting as much as the lifting of it. It's a combination of water quality issues together that eventually resolves itself. The algae bloom has its days. Keep the heat & we'll get over its bloom quicker. Something we deal with every year. Winds blow it off the surface or load up one place & clean up another. We'll see some all year, but it has its peak season & we'll get thru it. Water column temp readings 7-12-22. We'll check it again next week.

Surface temps still holding between 63-66F. Surface algae hasn't been bad since cooling off & some pretty stiff winds clearing the surface. However, we gained quite a bit of color and particulates in the water. The northern tui chub spawners are heading back south. So we'll be finding a few more of those. As next week rolls in with warmer temps, we'll see some changes again. Trout are still out there. Every day a little different. We still have em...... Read More
