Plenty of good action is available at Lake Almanor, according to Doug Neal of Almanor Fishing Adventures. "Pond smelt fry are thick from Prattville to Almanor West", reported Neal. "The trout and salmon are feeding on the fry as bug activity slows. Troll top water close to shore in the early morning, and move down deeper as the sun climbs higher.
"Smaller lures like a silver-color No.2 Luhr Jensen Needlefish with scent added are working well. Running gold Seps 04 dodgers with a piece of crawler 18 to 24 inches back has caught some browns well over six pounds.
"The trolling bite has been holding strong from Rec1 to the A-frame. Hamilton Branch to Big Springs has been another top trolling slot. Browns, rainbows and king salmon are being caught, but salmon averaging 17 inches have been the most abundant. Salmon are also being caught on bait near Big Springs. Anchovy tails on a No. 8 hook with scent are the top producers."
Neal added, "If you need to use a public boat ramp, check out the USFS ramp on the west shore. It now has a second ramp with dock, and improved parking."
