Sacramento River striper and sturgeon fishing improving

Things are looking up for anglers on the Sacramento River, reported Phil Peeples at the Tackle Box in Chico. "We were blown off the water a couple of days this week", observed Peeples. "A few sturgeon are being caught; it's not hot but they are getting them. Several have been in the slot [legal size], and I heard from one angler who got two that were oversize."

"Most of the anglers have been fishing from Butte City and down to below Colusa. Best bait has been ghost shrimp. If the pikeminnows are causing trouble by picking at your bait, switch to eel."

Peeples continued, "The best is yet to come with the striper run. Stripers are being caught, but we have not heard of any over 10 pounds. Down around Tisdale, the guides are getting stripers on live minnows, but closer to here most anglers are using cut bait or plastic worms."
