It was a cold morning for the fishermen, but the trout didn't care!

Low flows on the rivers equal clear water, and clear water can lead to a tough bite.  We've pushed off several river salmon and steelhead dates, but fortunately, Shasta Lake is providing some steady trout fishing action.  Limits haven't been hard to come by and have  we put in some time to dial in what the trout on Shasta are looking for this winter.  Its not the time of the year to trophy hunt, but there are definitely a few big trout still hanging out in the lake.  That being said, I've been looking for limits and not a few big fish bites throughout the day.  We did hook a big brown this week but he came off after a few big surges on the 5 color lead core behind the boat.  I think our first good rain will pull some big spawners up into the arms of the lake and we'll see an influx of post spawn adults coming back down into the lake.  I havent caught any post spawners since I started back on Shasta in late November, so I'm expecting to see them anytime.  We'll likely finish off the last two weeks of river salmon salmos season but until then, its all about Shasta Lake trout!
