Shasta Lake Bows and a couple of salmon will be on the dinner plate for Mike tonight.

Shasta Lake is kicking out some quality Trout and Salmon right now. The fish have been feeding on baby shad all summer, packing on  as much fat for the colder fall and winter months ahead. They are also hanging pretty deep, our bite zone was between 80 and 115 feet yesterday. Surface temperatures over much of the main body channels were 78 to 80 degrees. Smoke from the fires was minimal and the actually kept air temps on the cooler side most of day.

The fish bite is sporadic with the exception being the spotted Bass. When we trolled our shad imitation plugs, rapalas, and spoons the we often caught bass when our speeds were 2mph or less. Our success for the finicky salmon and trout came at speeds of 2.5 to 3.5 mph.

The salmon and trout bite is on and off right now. Every fish we landed was full of dime size shad, so covering a lot of water looking for biting fish is a must. Once you find a biter working that area hard for more biters often produced a few more. The Trout bite also seemed to better later in day with the sun directly overhead.

Fishing will continue to get better, September forward is often an a great on Shasta Lake and chasing Trophy Browns into fall and winter month is almost here.
