August 1st is a special day here in the north state.  Not only does the Sacramento River open to King salmon fishing above Red Bluff, but the 5.5 mile section of the Sac River in Redding that has been closed to fishing since April opens as well.  This provides some of the best wild rainbow trout fishing in the western United States.  After four months of solitude and a feeding frenzy on winter run King salmon eggs, these big rainbows definitely have let their guard down making them very easy to catch and release.  Its a much anticipated event for trout guides/anglers and it just about never disappoints.  Yes, the Posse Grounds boat launch will be stuffed with drift boats and there will be countless fly fishing guides jockying for position on all the productive riffles and runs between the Lake Redding water diversion dam and Park Marina, but its definitely an annual event worth attending.  Its become just as popular as the Barge Hole salmon opener down river on many levels. After a few weeks the crowds will die down slightly until its business as usual on the Sacramento River trout grounds in Redding.  The river below the SR 44 bridge will still be productive water and today was a fine example.  Captain Justin Thompson had a trip today and it turned out to be a very productive day, catching and releasing some great wild rainbow trout.  We have very few days left to guide on this fishery, but give Jaynie a call to see if she can squeeze your group in somewhere on the schedule.  Its a great option and our clients always have a good time!  Thank you!
