Spring is just around corner (Yreka and the surrounding areas) and with it comes more fishing options. Temperatures are hovering near freezing in the early mornings and into 50 to 60 degree range by late afternoon. Bass Lake, Lake Siskiyou, and McCloud Reservoir have been providing some outstanding Trout fishing over the past couple of weeks. Sunday my son Conner and I caught and released McCloud Trout all afternoon using a variety of trolled offerings: K-7 Kwikfish, Rapalas, Seps Dodgers and spoons, worms and Woolly bugger flies. All our offerings were scented with Pro-Cure water soluble krill and shrimp oils. These oils put out a great scent trail and the Trout were hammering our bait versus nibbling. Conner and I had very few short bites where we had to work to set the hook, the Trout more often than not hooked themselves. The Brown and Rainbow Trout  were in the 3/4 to 2 pounds class and putting up great battles on our ultra light Rogue rods (2-6lb.) and Pflueger reels spooled with 6lb. Yo-Zuri hybrid clear line.

The upper Klamath River is still kicking out some Winter Steelhead and Trout. As the river warms the stone flies will begin to move around providing another food source for hungry Summer Steelhead and Trout. The late spring early Summer Salmon fly hatch is a great time on the Klamath River providing may fly fishing as well as conventional fishing options.

Eagle Lake will open up Memorial day weekend May 25, 2013 providing another season (closes December 31, 2013) to land the famous Eagle Lake Trout. It is very important to check water and weather conditions before heading to Susanville to fish this great lake. Low water and high winds are common issues here.
