Nor Cal Fish Reports
Wind is battering angling prospects from mountain lakes down to the Bay/Delta. Not all is lost. Trout bite remains great at Collins Lake. Kokanee fishing is on at Pardee, bass are biting in Tracy and Lake Chabot and shad are making their presence felt on the lower Yuba River and the Sacramento River near Freeport. Here are this week’s Best Bites:
TRACY black bass: Black bass bite is very good. Frog bite is coming on. Punching is productive. Senkos also get action. Last weekend’s tournament netted a 9.47 pound fish and a bag weighing 23.12 pounds took the one-day event. Seven bags were larger than 21 pounds. Tracy Oasis Marina (209) 835-3182
LAKE CHABOT bass: Bass bite has picked up. The right side of the lake is holding largemouth. Soft plastics will get bass 6 to 9 pounds. Most are 2 to 3 pounds. A 7.8 pound bass was landed and released by Calvin Bleth of Castro Valley using Yamamoto worms. (510) 247-2526
COLLINS LAKE trout: Trout fishing is very good. Green Power Bait has been the most productive bait. Find fish in the top 20 feet of water. Two 7 pound rainbows were landed last week. 1-800-286-0576
LAKE PARDEE kokanee: Kokanee bite is very good. Limits are the norm for kokes in the 12-inch range. Fish are fat. Find them in 30 to 50 feet of water. Magic colors have been pink, green and blue. It changes regularly as long as it’s a hoochie behind a dodger. Lake Pardee Marina (209) 772-8108
CENTRAL VALLEY shad: Best spots to intercept shad are on the Sacramento River near Freeport and the lower Yuba River. At Freeport, shore anglers use 1-ounce egg sinkers and a shad dart. Boaters need 2 ounces. The Yuba has shad from the dam to the mouth. Johnson’s Bait & Tackle (530) 674-1912; Freeport Bait (916) 665-1935
