Nor Cal Fish Reports

Calendar says mid-October but we still have summer weather. You can complain about the lack of rain or just enjoy what we have. Since complaining does no good, get the sunscreen and the fishing gear and get after it. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

SACRAMENTO RIVER salmon: Salmon bite has moved upstream from Los Molinos to Red Bluff. Get it while you can. Scott Feist (530) 923-2634

CONVICT LAKE trout: Five fish larger than 6 pounds were hooked last week. A variety of baits and lures worked. Nightcrawlers and Power Bait remained top picks for catching some of the largest fish. Other top choices that were hooking up were Sierra Slammers, Berkley Mice Tails, Thomas Buoyants and Tasmanian Devils.  (760) 934-3800

HEENAN LAKE cutthroat: A 28-inch cutt was caught last weekend at Heenan Lake by Carl Ronk of Rancho Cucamonga on a Prince Nymph from a float tube. Fishing is very productive, overall. Panther Martin spinners are out-producing flies, but both get action. Lake closes to fishing Oct. 31. Creekside Lodge (530) 694-2511

MAMMOTH LAKES trout: Trout bite is good and you can have the lakes to yourself during the off-season. Ken Clark of L.A. caught a 6.12 pound trout from Lake Mamie with a red/gold Thomas Bouyant. Bob Smith of Montebello landed an 8.4 pounder from Lake Mary on a copper Thomas Bouyant. Big rainbows were planted last Friday. Trout are holding in the deeper water and very few are fishing. Rick’s Sport Center (760) 934-3416

RIO VISTA striped bass: Striper bite was very good all weekend during the Rio Vista Derby. Best weekend of productive fishing of the fall. Bait fishing was best south of town. Trollers head north of town. Sturgeon are showing at Marker 1 and further down toward Pittsburg. Hap’s Bait (707) 374-2372

PYRAMID LAKE cutthroat: Cutthroat fishing has been excellent, maybe even a better start than last year’s great year. More trout and larger trout are being weighed in. Best action is by boat. Best shore beaches are Pelican and Hell’s Kitchen. Big fish of the week weighed 17.4 pounds Crosby’s Lodge (775) 476-0400

ANTIOCH striped bass: Keeper stripers are being caught every day from the Antioch Pier. Boaters go to Sherman Lake and West Island. Big Break and Dutch Slough also have been productive. A lot of five to 10 pound stripers are being caught. Shad, sardines are consistent producers. Live gobies or bluegill are worth trying. There has been some sturgeon action at Buoy 18. Gotcha Bait & Tackle (925) 706-7400

COASTAL rock cod: The surest bet going. Calm seas and willing rock cod and ling cod up and down the coast.
