Nor Cal Fish Reports

The fishing must be good because this week’s list of potential hot spots is longer than it has been all year. Even with wind hampering ocean fishing, there are plenty of freshwater and Bay/Delta action to satisfy most any angler. We have smallmouth, trout, crappie, black bass, striped bass all hitting hard at various spots. See where below. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

LAKE ALMANOR smallmouth, trout: Smallmouth bite is very good on the Chester side of the lake or Gould Swamp. Throw rip baits or plastics. Bass are on the beds.. Blood midge hatch is going full bore. Let the birds tell you where it’s on. Trout are keying on the blood midge. Fish a single nymph on a long leader with a slow retrieve. SAN PABLO BAY striped bass: Bass fishing remains excellent even with windy weather and minus tides. Limits of 4 to 8 pound stripers are common. Brothers has been a consistent producer. Larger fish are being caught Treasure Island and Southhampton. Trolling is out because of dirty water. Use live bait in the deeper water. Loch Lomond Marina (415) 456-0321

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR trout, perch: The reservoir has been producing some very nice fish this past week, including rainbows up to 9 pounds, browns up to around 2.5 pounds and some nice perch up to almost 3 pounds. The trolling has been pretty good with Rapalas, Needlefish and Mira Shads, both with lead core and toplining with mono. The bait anglers who are fishing out of boats have also started to do pretty well with Power Bait, nightcrawlers and Mice Tails. The shore anglers are having limited success both casting lures and fishing bait down near the dam. (760) 932-7707 www.kenssport.com

FRANKS TRACT, DISCOVERY BAY largemouth bass: Bass anglers are enjoying a hot and heavy bed fish bite. Drop-shots, frogs, spinner baits all get action. Some use crank baits. Last week a 12 pounder was caught and numerous 9 and 10 pounders were landed. Hook, Line & Sinker (925) 625-2441

NORTH FORK FEATHER RIVER trout: Trout fishing is excellent. Nymph through faster water. Fish the pools and tail-outs early and late with dry flies. Trout to 18 inches are being landed. Fishing is good from Pulga upstream. Fish First (530) 343-8300.

VIRGINIA LAKES trout: Little Virginia is fishing excellent right now with some anglers reporting catching and releasing 30 or 40 fish per day. Big Virginia is about 75 percent ice free now and should start picking up anytime. Spin anglers are using Mice Tails, Power Bait and nightcrawlers, as well as casting Thomas Bouyants, Kastmasters and Vibrax lures. Fly anglers are going with Twin Lakes Specials, simi seal leeches, seal buggers, matukas, soft hackles, and ap emergers. (760) 932-7707 www.kenssport.com

LAKE SHASTA crappie: The best crappie bite in years is taking place. Bite is very good in nearly every cove. Use small swim baits in five to 10 feet of water. Crappie are 1 to 2 pounds. Phil’s Propeller 1-800-462-3917

LAKE OROVILLE bass: Bass bite is very good. Senkos and tubes are a good bet. Largemouth are starting to spawn and anglers are sight fishing. There’s a bit of a top water in the morning. Middle fork and the main body are good spots. Bass Tackle Depot (530) 533-4990

LAKE PARDEE kokanee: Kokanee bite is underway here. Average fish is 12 inches. Find them between 35 and 50 feet. Pink, orange, purple and green are the productive colors (in that order). (209) 772-8108

NEW MELONES you name it: Trout, bass, catfish all are biting well plus the kokanee action is starting to take hold. Pick your passion. Glory Hole Sports Glory Hole Sports (209) 736-4333
