Nor Cal Fish Reports

Go to the salt for the best of September. The arrival of September has delivered a hot salmon bite outside the Golden Gate and continued spectacular bottom fishing from Crescent City to San Luis Obispo. There are other options available, including trout in Mammoth and the June Lake Loop; bass at Clear Lake and stripers at Del Valle. Get the details in this week’s Best Bites:

CLEAR LAKE bass: Jig bite is good in the deeper, rocky areas. Tournament on Saturday yielded two bags heavier than 27 pounds. Biggest fish fell to jigs. LV500 bite should start picking up. Weeds are dying off so there is a brown/tan tint to the lake. Water temperature is 75 to 78 degrees. When the temps drop to the 60s the fall bite will begin. Clear Lake Outdoors (707) 262-5852

DEL VALLE striped bass: Striped Bass are going crazy on shad, blowing up the surface in aggressive boils. The boils have been scattered though out the day, from early morning to late afternoon into the evenings. (925) 449-5201

JUNE LAKE LOOP trout: Gull Lake is the star of the Loop this week. Four trout weighing between 6 and 8 pounds have been caught this week. The June, Silver and Grant are always worth a try, too.

MAMMOTH LAKES trout: Lake George is the hot spot in the Mammoth Basin. Large trout to six pounds are being caught with inflated nightcrawlers. Fish deep in the morning and evening. Garlic attractant will help. Nights are getting cooler so fishing should further improve. Rick’s Sport Center (760) 934-3416

SHAVER LAKE trout/smallmouth: Most fishing Shaver Lake go home with limits. The trout bite has been awesome with more big fish coming in this week. Bank fishermen are scoring pretty good in the roads 1, 2 and 3 areas, along with the shoreline near the dam. Trout dough bait or crawlers are used most. Crickets and a rocky area spell fantastic smallmouth fishing right now. Dick Nichols (559) 841-3317

EAST CARSON RIVER trout: Alpine County Fish & Game this week is planting 1,800 pounds of trout in the East Carson to prepare for the Labor Day weekend. Fish the deep holes upstream from Markleeville. Creekside Lodge (530) 694-2511

GOLDEN GATE salmon: An up-and-down season may be on its way up if the results of this week are an indication. Limits were the rule on Tuesday and party boats were getting a fish per rod or better on the days leading up to Tuesday. Duxbury, Muir Beach and the Main Ship Channel are the top spots.

COASTAL rock cod: It’s limit rock cod fishing from the North Coast to the Central Coast. It’s going to get better as ling cod move in to shallower water to spawn.
