Nor Cal Fish Reports
Look east or west and you will find great fishing. On the east side, trout fishing continues to be great in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, June Lake Loop and Twin Lakes. To the west, Bay and ocean fishing has been spectacular with limits of striped bass inside the Golden Gate and limits of salmon being found outside. That goes along with stellar rock fish catches from Crescent City to Morro Bay and all points in between. Here are this week’s Best Bites:
SAN FRANCISCO Bay stripers: It doesn’t change. Epic striper fishing continues. Sometimes in different spots, but fish are plentiful and action constant. There also are stripers out along the beaches from Ocean Beach to San Gregorio. Action is at night, though small boats following schools reported catching and releasing 60 bass off the Pacifica shoreline. Hi’s Tackle Box (650) 588-1200; Loch Lomond Marina (415) 456-0321 Sole Man Sportfishing (510) 703-4148
GOLDEN GATE salmon: Party Boats are getting into limits outside the Gate. Most of the action has been a half-mile off Pacifica. Quality is good, too. Good to see the fish move from Marin and show up other places.
COASTAL rock cod: A sure thing for anglers up and down the coast. Plentiful rock fish and bountiful ling cod. This show should play through the fall.
TWIN LAKES trout: The Twins picked up nicely this week with lots of good reports on bait and some nice fish being caught trolling. An 11 pound brown was caught and released on Lower Twin. Bait anglers did great with Mice Tails as well as some fish on crawlers and Power Bait. Trolling anglers are doing the best with lead core rigs with 6 to 8 colors out dragging small Rapalas, Needlefish and Thomas Bouyants. (760) 932-7071; Lower Twin (760) 932-7751
MAMMOTH LAKES trout: Trout bite isn’t slowing. Lake Mary and Lake George are by far the top spots in the basin. Power Worms or Mice Tails fished early in the morning or late in the afternoon work best. Fish the drop-offs. A 12.2 pound rainbow was caught this week from Lake Mary from shore with a Mice Tail. Rick’s Sport Center (760) 934-3416
JUNE LAKE LOOP trout: The marina operators here are honest about telling when the fishing is poor and don’t over-exaggerate when it’s good. Reports are all three lakes are fishing very well and for big trout to three pounds. June Lake Marina (760) 648-7726; Gull Lake Marina (760) 648-7539; Silver Lake (760) 648-7525
BULLARDS BAR kokanee: Kokanee are down 60 feet and fish have been in the 10 and 11 inch range. Bite is very good and limits are common. As a side note, catfish bite is good up river near the waterfall. Nightcrawlers work well. Emerald Cove Resort & Marina (530) 692-3200
