Lunker list features big lings, cats

This week’s big fish list is topped by quality ocean catches. Two of the best are by anonymous ang;ers – a 65 pound halibut caught Tuesday at the South Reef out of Crescent City and a 49 pound ling cod caught out of Trinidad.

 


Notable ling cod were caught out of Morro Bay and Avila Beach. Sheila Ward of Los Osos pulled up a 21 pound ling at Point Sal from the Patriot (Avila Beach) … Amelia Martinez of Pixley caught a 15 pound ling from the Patriot … Meghan Fox of Morro Bay hooked a 17 pound ling off San Simeon fishing from the Endeavor (Morro Bay) … Jeff Elstron of Cambria also landed a 17 pound ling on the Endeavor … Dave Symons of Fresno gaffed a 15 pound ling from the Endeavor.

 


Best reported salmon came from the New Easy Rider in Berkeley where Bob Swan from Vacaville had a 25 pound salmon trolling on the North Bar.

 


The Eastern Sierra Nevada continues to produce big trout, especially at Convict Lakes and Mammoth Lakes.

 


Big fish of the week at Convict was a 6.9 pound rainbow caught by Jackie Bentley of Austin, Tx., fishing with garlic Gulp … Nora McCall of Cypress landed a 6 pounder fishing with Power Bait near the Marina … Dan Kaffer of Minden, Nv., caught a 6.8 pound trout using a nightcrawler along the north shore.

 

Twin Lakes (Bridgeport) kicked out a 7.12 pound rainbow to Gail Whisnand of Long Beach who was trolling a Speedy Shiner.

 

Biggest of all the Eastern Sierra rainbows was a 9 pounder taken from Lake Mary by Sean Jensen of Phoenix, Az. He was using Trout Teasers from a float tube.

 


Biggest trout in the Bay Area came from Los Vaqueros, where Victor Guido of San Jose used Kastmaster in South Cove to fool an 11 pounder … Frank Moser landed a 9 pounder using Power Bait in South Cove.

 


The rest of the big fish reported were catfish.

 


Aaron Smith of Ventura caught a 24.4 pound catfish at Lopez Lake using mackerel at Strawberry Flats.

 

Dave Daski of Reno caught a 16 pound catfish from the dock at Collins Lake.

 


Daniel Mahan of San Jose caught a 15.9 pound catfish at Del Valle using anchovies near the dam.

 

Finally, Malcolm Fey, who last week caught the Quarry Lake record smallmouth, returned on his float tube to catch an 8.3 pound catfish.
