Best Bites: July 9 through July 15

Nor Cal Fish Reports

Inland prospects are a bit meager given the peak of summer and the low water, but there are some options available. Trout in Alpine County, stripers at Del Valle, catfish at New Melones are among the tops. Otherwise, there continues to be a torrid striper bite is San Francisco Bay, excellent rock cod fishing from Crescent City to Morro Bay and improving salmon fishing in Eureka, Fort Bragg, and the Marin County Coast. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

LAKE DEL VALLE striped bass: Stripers are biting regularly. Most of the stripers are in the three to five pound range. Best areas have been the narrows and near the dam with anchovies. Every once in a while a big one surprises. Del Valle Marina (925) 449-5201

NEW MELONES catfish: The catfish are in shallow water and heavily feeding. This has been one of the best years for catfish, and anglers are bringing in some really nice ones. Some anglers are reporting catching dozens of cats on each trip. The bite seems to be best at night, but it is very possible to catch them during the day as well. Frozen shad, anchovies and mackerel have been producing fish.
Glory Hole Sports (209) 736-4333

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR trout: This Alpine County lake has been heavily stocked and fishing is great if you can get to the middle of the lake. Use Kastmasters, Mepp’s spinners or Panther Martins. Creekside Lodge (530) 694-2511

JUNE LAKE LOOP trout: June Lake and Silver Lake both are putting out thick trout. A lot of 3 to 4 pound trout are being caught at June by bait dunkers in boats. Silver Lake has had a good showing of 6 to 8 pound trout landed by boaters using nightcrawlers. Mice Tails also are a good bet. Red and gold Thomas Buoyant works best for trollers. Silver Lake (760) 648-7525

SAN FRANCISCO BAY striped bass: There is no sign of the striper bite slowing down and upcoming favorable tides should only improve conditions. Red Rock, Alcatraz, Raccoon Straits, Richardson Bay, South Tower and Paradise all hold bass. Hi’s Tackle Box (650) 588-1200; Loch Lomond Marina (415) 456-0321

COASTAL rock cod: Rock cod and ling cod fishing is good out of every harbor in Northern California. Ling cod bite is especially good out of Crescent City, Half Moon Bay and Monterey. It’s nice to have a sure thing every once in a while.
