Nor Cal Fish Reports
Finding sure things in the angling world is hard enough, but coming off a heat wave and entering a full moon phase makes that prospect more difficult. There are good option on the Eastern Sierra and Alpine Lake on the Western Sierra is getting a plant of 1,800 pounds this week. Salmon are making a better showing on the Sac, especially from Grimes to Chico. Shoreline salmon anglers have a chance in Benicia and Pillar Point. Here are this week’s Best Bites:
CROWLEY LAKE trout: Trout are in the north arm and McGee Bay. Fly fishers find trout in 12 to 17 feet of water. Weeds are starting to dissipate and that will help a lot. Trollers work in 20 to 30 feet of water with Needlefish, Tasmanian Devil or Thomas Bouyants. Bite is wide open. Water temp is 64 degrees. Guide Mickey Baron (760) 937-3245; Crowley Lake Fish Camp (760) 935-4301
JUNE LAKE trout: Trout in the 5 to 8 pound range are being caught. Two eight pound rainbows were landed last week, one took a Tasmanian Devil the other came on a Needlefish. Trolling get the best results, but Power Bait can work, too. Cooler nights have brought the fish closer to the surface. June Lake Marina (760) 648-7726
LEWISTON LAKE trout: Flows out of Trinity have dropped back to normal and trout bite is good. Limits are common for those trolling or casting Little Cleos north of the Marina. Bait fishing is best for those using pink Power Bait. Pine Cove Marina (530) 778-3878
SHAVER LAKE trout: It is time to target trout. The trout bite continues to be great, but the fish are a tad smaller. Limits are the norm, said guide Dick Nichols. The island, Eagle Point and the Stevenson Creek areas hold trout 20 to 40 feet deep. Dick Nichols (559) 841-3317; Shaver Lake Marina (559) 841-3324
SACRAMENTO RIVER (Colusa) salmon: Salmon are being caught in Grimes, Colusa and Ord Bend. Spinners, Kwikfish or roe all work. Spinners and Kwikfish work best to Ord Bend. Roe is popular above Ord Bend. Kittle’s (530) 458-4868
SHORELINE salmon: In Benicia A dozen salmon per day are being caught from the shores of the state park and another half-dozen per day from First Street with Flying C spinners. At Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay, salmon released from pens are returning to the harbor giving shoreline anglers a rare chance at kings.. Benicia Bait (707) 745-4921; Half Moon Bay Sportfishing & Tackle (510) 581-2628
