Started out today at 12:30 pm with my buddy Jim "The Greek" Vretzos with 77 degree water. We stopped at a bluff wall that I always seem to catch fish on with no takers. We were starting off with swim baits and jigs and the day proved tough. So out came the spinning gear and landed a nice spot on a dart head keitech. So we left the narrows and headed up north landing a smallmouth at Schoolhouse on the same bait. It's now 3:30 with only 2 keepers and I pick up the Whopper Plopper in Puttah Creek and BAM!!! Back to back casts I landed a 5 and a 3+ in 3′ of water next to a grass line. And there is a pattern! Jim started catching them on a brush hog and Senkos while I was still looking for some top water. We headed to the Vinyards with a couple of blow ups but the water was a little too wind blown. We ended up in the back of Pleasure cove with very shallow water and lots of grass and started getting on some top water action boating another 5 largies.. It started getting dark so back to Markley we go and I got another Two largies on back to back casts next to a weed line with the best one pushing 4#. All in all we had a pretty slow day with most of the fish on a Rainbow Trout Whopper Plopper and our best 5 around the 18# mark in shallow water paralleling grass lines. Top water can be used at any time of the day so don't be afraid to break the rules once in a while, it can pay off big. Thanx for your time...
