Fishing Conditions and Hatches

Fishing Conditions and Hatches: Fair to Good

Legally there's nothing stopping you from wading in Hot Creek (unless you're a guide and their clients). But if you enjoy fishing Hot Creek, and if you're reading this you probably are, STAY OUT OF THE WATER THIS TIME OF YEAR. This is the time of year when all those wonderful browns are spawning and besides trampling the Redds you're over stressing them so stay up on the bank and have fun. If you're wondering where the Redds are, it's the ENTIRE stream, that's what makes the creek so good.

For this time of year the fishing reports are surprisingly consistent. The water was dirty for a day or two but it's clearing up fast and the weed flush was a wonderful thing. Fishing has picked up right where it left off, just remember that it wasn't a long enough break for the fish to get stupid so the drift is still everything. The best action seems to be getting better later now, 11 instead of 10 but they remain consistent otherwise.

There are still a few Tricos around, hatch is 9:30-10 and spinner fall 11-12. By now this is an interpretive site event only. The Baetis are starting to emerge late morning, they are on the small size, #20-22. Either dry/dry or dry/nymph try using big stimulators, the October Caddis are getting active. With the colder water the weeds are starting to die off but I still tell my clients that a 4 second drift is average and finish with an aggressive pickup, you will hook fish you never knew existed.
