The California Fish and Game Commission adopted new regulations for the recreational crab fishery which are effective November 1, 2021. The revised regulations include the following new requirements when fishing with crab traps:

  • Every crab trap must be marked with a main buoy at least 5 inches in diameter x 11 inches in length, and red marker buoy that is 3 inches in diameter x 5 inches in length.
  • Traps must be serviced at least once every 9 days.
  • A Recreational Crab Trap Validation is required for every person fishing for crabs with traps.
  • Each angler is limited to 10 traps.
  • Season opening and closing dates are subject to change. The CDFW Director may modify the season dates to minimize marine life entanglement risk.
