Bob Tyler and I teamed up to fish the annual RBBass Memorial Day challenge where we camp and seek bragging rights. The morning started out overcast and warm at launch. We ran up lake and started fishing top water River 2 Sea Whopper Plopper and Rover looking for fish. We worked in and out of main lake pockets, coves and points with not even a look from a dink. I was graphing plenty of fish in the 12-18ft. range so we switched to plastics. Bob pulled out his Dobyns 702 Champion Series rods rigged with a Aron’s Magic worm and a watermelon colored brush hog. I pulled out my GLoomis MBR783C rigged with a 1/4 oz football jig with a Yamamoto Hula Grub cinnamon w/black flake on 10lb Seaguar invizx . After 4 hours of fishing we only had 3 fish in the live well that Bob caught. We made a run to the mouth of Mt. Springs and started on a wide point with a nice drop off. I caught two fish with my grub off the point giving us a small limit. We continued to fish the area until 2 o’clock. With only one hour remaining, I ran to one of my favorite points just outside the launch ramp. Plenty of boats stop and work this point over but almost everyone of them stop and cast to the shore and work their baits down the drop. I’ve had my best results getting right on top, as shallow as I can, and casting out to deep water and working my lures up the point. Bob and I started with swim baits first. Nothing. He switched to his brush hog and I went with my Yamamoto grub. I made about 6 or 7 casts working up the side of the point when my jig felt heavy and I could see the line moving sideways. I set the hook and the fun began! After what seemed like a half hour Bob got her in the net. When we got our fish on the scale we had just over 17 lbs with my big fish weighing in at 10.30lbs. I fished the rest of the day, night and next day without a single bite! My big fish had not spawned yet and with the cooler weather we have been getting, I’m sure a good week of warm temps will pull up more fish to the shallows and onto beds.
