Eagle Lake Fish Report

Eagle Lake - Susanville, CA (Lassen County)

Great fishing weather all week and very good fishing to go along with it.  The weather has been as cool as the high teens at night and low forty's during the day, but most days this past week it has been night time temps in the high 20's and day time temps in the mid to high 40's.  We've had overcast weather most mornings and sometimes all day long resulting in an almost all-day-bite.  The word is out on the good fishing up here at Eagle Lake and folks are showing up to take advantage of it.  Almost every day this past week the Spalding Launch Ramp parking lot area was loaded almost to capacity.  Folks were showing up in the afternoon, launching their boats, and in  by dark with limits of Eagle Lake trout.  We fished this week inside Pelican Point with orange grubs in water 6-10 feet deep with our trolled grubs set at 3 to 6 feet deep.  As mentioned above, the bite lasted well into the morning and even afternoons, especially when we had cloud cover.

Note: (and this is just my opinion) Find water that is at least 40 degrees F to fish. The bite in cooler water, in my experience, is much slower.  Currently you can find that water temperature closer to and south of Pelican Point, as well as off the Youth Camp shoreline.

Most days we had 8-15 hookups before putting an average fish in the  box of around 3lbs.  Our biggest fish this week were a 4lber and 3lb 8ozer caught on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Those opting to bobber fish should do so off the Youth Camp Shoreline.  Set up in 12-20 feet of water.  Set your threaded night crawlers at 5 feet below the surface.  Lower the depth of your night crawler all the way down to three feet off the bottom as the morning progresses.  If this does not do it, go trolling.  The trolling is really good right now.

Launching: Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility, but the launch ramp is very icy most mornings.  Take your time.  Even 4 wheel drive vehicles can slip.  Chain up, it works.  After you launch your boat, as you pull your trailer out of the water, pause to let as much water as possible drain off your trailer and back into the lake, not onto the launch ramp where it will freeze up and compound the icy ramp problem.
